Need help to apply System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Cumulative Update 2?

leave a comment »

Once again Kevin Holman posted how to perform this update step by step…

The KB979257 article describes the fixes and changes and instructions
Get it from the download Center

This is not a huge hotfix rollup…. It does contain some substantial fixes however, and if impacted, you should consider applying this update. If you have not yet tested and applied CU1 to your R2 management group, then you absolutely should skip CU1 and apply CU2 as soon as possible.

The release notes in the KB article above cover the fixes that are included. The main ones I have seen in the field are the SNMP device view issue, and the Console crashing when opening multiple views. I have added it to my Recommended Hotfix page, but if you aren’t impacted by any of these issues, you can certainly pass on a cumulative update, and pick up the next one that provides a fix you need.

leave a comment »

As VMST 2.1, VMST 3.0 builds on the functionality of VMST 2.1 and adds some new features, which are designed to streamline the process of keeping offline virtual machines, templates and VHDs up-to-date with the latest operating system and application updates, without introducing vulnerabilities into your virtualization infrastructure.

New available features in VMST 3.0:
– Offline virtual machines in a SCVMM library.
– Stopped and saved state virtual machines on a host.
– Virtual machine templates.
– Offline virtual hard disks in a SCVMM library by injecting update packages.
– Windows Server 2008 R2 failover clusters running Hyper-V.

VMST 3.0 is designed to work with Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 or SCVMM 2008 R2, and with the following technologies:
– Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP1 or WSUS 3.0 SP2.
– System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 SP1, SCCM 2007 R2, or SCCM 2007 SP2.
– VMST 3.0 also provides the option to manually copy updates to service offline VHDs.
– The tool works with Windows Task Scheduler to enable scheduling the servicing job.

To sign up to the beta go to Microsoft Connect (Connect ID required).

Blue Screen of Death – Microsoft’s Initial Response To MS10-015 / KB977165

leave a comment »

Microsoft’s security operation have issued an initial response to the issue with machines blue screening and failing to reboot correctly after installing MS10-015.

While we work to address this issue, customers who choose not to install the update can implement the workaround outlined in the bulletin. CVE-2010-0232 was publicly disclosed and we previously issued Security Advisory 979682 in response. Customers can disable the NTVDM subsystem as a workaround and we have provided an automated method of doing that with a Microsoft Fix It that you can find here.

Customers who are experiencing issues after installing any of our security updates can get help resolving the issues by either going to this site or by calling 1-866-PCSafety (1-866-727-2338). International customers can find local support contact numbers here.

Hyper-V Security Update KB977894

leave a comment »

Apply this update or you may suffer a Denial-of-Service (DOS) attack.  An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to a Hyper-V virtual machine to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users. This problem affects all installation types on both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

A denial of service vulnerability exists in Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of specific sequences of machine instructions by Hyper-V. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause the affected Hyper-V system to stop responding. This would affect all virtual machines hosted by that system.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 Rollup Package

with one comment

Rollup package available via Windows Update or manually download the hotfix rollup from the Microsoft Update Catalog

List of issues that are fixed
Issue 1
Consider the following scenario:

A user is a member of the Self-Service User role.
A new virtual machine is created, and the user is assigned the owner of the virtual machine.
In this scenario, the user cannot connect to the virtual machine by using the Self-Service Portal.

Issue 2
Consider the following scenario:

A highly available virtual machine is offline.
Quick Storage Migration is used to move the offline virtual machine to another storage location that is in the cluster.
In this scenario, the virtual machine does not migrate to another node that is in the cluster by using Quick Migration or Live Migration after Quick Storage Migration is used.

Issue 3
VMware virtual machines are not listed in the Virtual Machine Manager console if there are duplicate custom named tags in VMware Virtual Center.

Issue 4
Consider the following scenario:

A new virtual machine is created, and the owner of the virtual machine is a member of the Self-Service User role.
While the create virtual machine job is running, a user is added or removed from the Self-Service User role.
In this scenario, the user is not added or removed from the Self-Service User role because the create virtual machine job is running.
This rollup also includes the resolutions that are documented in the following article for a Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 hotfix rollup package:

KB976244 – Description of the System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 hotfix rollup package: November 10, 2009
